Freedom House Announces Camaran Pipes as Director of Asia Programs
Freedom House is pleased to announce the selection of Camaran Pipes as director of Asia programs. In her role, Pipes will oversee strategic planning and development and implementation of Freedom House’s expanding Asia portfolio.
“Camaran’s experience working in the human rights, democracy, and governance field has helped propel our work in Asia,” said Freedom House president Michael J. Abramowitz. “Since joining Freedom House in 2021, Camaran has skillfully guided the Asia program through a time of rapid growth. We are thrilled to have her lead our efforts to support activists and their quest for freedom in a region where democracy is under attack.”
Pipes brings nearly two decades of experience to the director of Asia programs role. Her work has included civic engagement, peacebuilding, combating violent extremism, and supporting the role of women in peace and security. She joined Freedom House as Senior Program Manager and was later appointed Deputy Director of Asia Programs.
“Freedom House's work to defend human rights and supporting those in their struggle for freedom in Asia is something I am extraordinarily proud to be part of,” said Pipes. “I look forward to continuing to grow our Asia portfolio and expand Freedom House’s impact supporting civil society and human rights defenders.”
Prior to joining Freedom House, Pipes worked with the Tides Center, where she managed an innovative grant portfolio engaging civil society organizations throughout Asia to protect, defend, and promote civic space. She previously held positions with Management Systems International, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Regional Office for Southeast Asia, Equal Access International, and Salam Institute for Peace and Justice. She holds an MPA in international management, with a focus in human rights and peacebuilding from the Monterey Institute for International Studies.
Freedom House is a nonprofit, nonpartisan democracy organization that works to create a world where all are free. We inform the world about threats to freedom, mobilize global action, and support democracy’s defenders.
